They chose one palette for the two of them: white, and white again. Hers — a heavy silk dress, gathered bodice, a skirt from a dropped waist and a long train. His — a loose suit the colour of warm milk, shirt and waistcoat to match, brown loafers. For jewellery, only large earrings and a sleek low bun. Everything else followed on its own: white flowers, a pale runner, a table under a white cloth.

The place — a glass pavilion on a hill: tall arched windows in black frames, sandstone, clipped boxwood spheres along the path, lawn behind them and distant ridges on the horizon. The ceremony was held outside. A pale runner across the paved terrace, black bentwood chairs on either side, and for a backdrop a long panel painted in ink: mountains, a branch in bloom, a lotus. At its edges, two tall armfuls of white ranunculus, anemones and green grasses.

The sun stood high that hour and struck hard. First down the runner came a girl in a tiered white dress, holding a dark red box in both hands; guests filmed her on their phones. The words to each other were read from matching folded cards, each with their own. Beside them, right at the hem, stood a small white dog in a dark green harness — brought out on a green lead, and it honestly held its place through the whole ceremony. The bouquet — white narcissi with small blue blossoms.

Dinner moved inside the pavilion. A black-and-white chequered floor, light sheers at the windows, one long table and low arrangements of the same white flowers and grasses. A menu at every setting. Between courses she leaned to him over the back of his chair and hid both their faces behind the bouquet.

Towards evening they went out into the garden. The sun dropped behind the trees and turned horizontal: long stripes in the tall grass, string lights in the branches, a warm rim along their shoulders. A single black chair was carried onto the lawn — and the whole hour went on around it. Then they simply walked back to the pavilion, hand in hand, and the day ended in the same light it began with.
