A&VJanuary 2026

It started on the street. A stone gallery, flat daylight, a long row of columns — a backdrop nobody ordered and nobody built. A short white dress, a short two-layer veil, sharp pumps. On him a black suit and black sneakers. She lifts a foot off the paving, and that movement sets the tone for the whole day.

Then the hotel lobby, arranged like somebody's home collection: copper counters, shelves of plaster casts, art books, a mirror ball under a wooden ceiling, dark green paint and burgundy velvet. The bride stands at the desk with her back to the room, the veil almost reaching the floor. That was the only styling required: the place already knows how to do everything itself.

There was one flower that day — white phalaenopsis. Not a tight gathered bouquet but living stems: one in the bride's hand, another with a guest in a red jacket over a collarless white shirt. Against all that black and white the red reads as the single accent, and the day needed no more colour than that.

The ceremony took place in a dark hall with wooden benches. The overhead lights stayed off — only warm patches on faces and the white patch of the orchids. The guests sat close, and there were not many rows.

In the evening the two of them went deeper into the house: heavy drapes, glass chandeliers, a chequered floor. She pulls the curtain aside with the hand that holds the same orchids and follows him. Later an empty room turned up a hotel luggage trolley — a shining arc, a black curtain behind it; he climbed inside, she came up from the other side. That is what an evening looks like when nobody directs it.

Little is left at the end: a blurred step, the veil hanging from a hand, a stem of orchids almost at the floor. And two hands, hers and his, against black. One beautiful day, nothing extra.
